A fuss about ancient solfeggio tones

A fuss about ancient solfeggio tones

Why the ancient solfeggio scale isn't ancient, isn't solfeggio, and isn't a scale and how the two completely new sets of solfeggio tuning forks were born

I’m sure it was 2008 when I first heard about the ancient sounds of solfeggio (also called ancient solfeggio tones, ancient solfegio scale, sacred solfeggio tones, solfeggio scale, solfeggio frequencies). I thought then: “Hurrrrra! Eventually, someone discovered them! ” and I was really surprised by this thought. Music has always been present in my life, and from my first meeting with the cello, I was convinced that sound is a very powerful force. I couldn’t justify this belief with anything, but this feeling was beyond certainty. I think this is the reason why the ancient sounds of solfeggio intrigued me so much. In 2011 I bought (imported from the USA) a book called Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse[1] written by Dr. Leonard G. Horowitz and Dr. Joseph S. Puleo. I’ve never read the whole book, because my English at that time wasn’t enough to do so, and when it became good enough for me to face this reading, around 50th or maybe 60th page, I was simply disappointed.

Let’s start speaking a common language

I am a naturopathic practitioner and I practice sound healing on a daily basis. I have a soft spot for Tibetan bowls and gong, although I also work with tuning forks. I have been following the sound healing market for a long time and I am constantly surprised by the incompetence of some practitioners. There are many bizarre and far-fetched theories around the sound that create a lot of confusion and even danger. I believe we should take sound therapy a little more seriously. The situation where anyone can start waggling tuning forks or banging the gong calling herself or himself a sound therapist is unacceptable. These therapists are usurpers. Sound therapy is an art and requires knowledge and a deep, healthy foundation. The knowledge is required as we work not only with the client’s physical body, we also work on the subtle levels of emotions and energy. The time has finally come for sound therapists to speak a common language. My dream is that we will create common rhetoric.

The greatest abuse I have encountered around sound healing so far is the theory of the ancient solfeggio sounds. I’m not going to prove that these sounds aren’t magic and don’t work/heal, but I also feel an inner need to tell my truth about them. When you search the internet for information about the ancient solfeggio tones, you can find one and the same distorted story, repeated by hundreds, if not thousands, of people. I humbly admit that I also repeated this story myself for some time. It turns out that we all suffer from a strange human ailment of considering given information to be true only because it has been repeated many times by others and it is not important that it is false. We so rarely check the information we receive. I wonder if the reason is laziness or the fact that we don’t even think that some information might be untrue.

Let’s start from the beginning. Ancient solfeggio tones are neither solfeggio nor ancient. They aren’t also a scale in the understanding of music. It doesn’t change the fact that I like them very much, I use them often and I know that they are the source of a lot of good things.

Where did the ancient solfeggio tones come from?

Codes for the Biological Apocalypse. This story says that the original solfeggio scale was developed by the Benedictine monk Guido d’Arezzo, who lived from around 991 to around 1050. According to various sources, this scale was used by singers to learn songs more easily (Gregorian chant). Today we know the solfeggio scale as seven ascending sounds assigned to the syllables Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti. The original scale consisted of six ascending notes assigned to the syllables Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La. The syllables for the scale were transferred from the hymn to St. John the Baptist, Ut Queant Laxis, written by Paulus Diaconus in the 8th century. Apparently, these sounds were lost and humanity forgot about them until the mid-1970s, when Dr. Joseph Puleo, an American physician and herbalist, rediscovered them. According to what can be read in the book Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse, Dr. Puleo had a vision in which an angelic being introduced him to the principles of the supposed Pythagorean method of reducing numbers to single digits and pointed out the 7th chapter of the Book of Numbers. Using the method introduced to him, Dr. Puleo discovered in the 7th chapter of the Book of Numbers, specifically in verses 12 to 83, a pattern of six repeating codes. In the aforementioned 7th chapter of Numbers, in verse 12, Dr. Puleo found a reference to the description of the first day, the second day was mentioned in verse 18, the third day was mentioned in verse 24, and so on, until the final reference in verse 78, which is the twelfth day. The 369 Hz frequency was created by reducing 12 to 3 (1 + 2 = 3), 18 to 9 (1 + 8 = 9) and 24 to 6 (2 + 4 = 6). The other frequencies were created in a similar way. Dr. Joseph Puleo found the next frequency by looking at verse 13 which speaks of sacrifice. Six verses later, in verse 19, the same sacrifice or idea was repeated, and again in verse 25. So, using the supposed Pythagorean method of reduction, Dr. Puleo rediscovered the pattern that is the second frequency, this time 417 Hz. The remaining frequencies were found using the same method. Then we learn that each syllable, that is the frequency assigned to it thanks to the codes found in the Book of Numbers, has been carefully researched by Dr. Puleo and other professional researchers and described as follows:

  • UT – 396 Hz – transforming grief into joy, freeing guilt and fear
  • RE – 417 Hz – reversing situations and facilitating changes
  • MI – 528 Hz – transformation, miracles and DNA repair
  • FA – 639 Hz – reconnecting and balancing the relationships
  • SOL – 741 Hz – problem-solving, expression and solutions
  • LA – 852 Hz – awakening of intuition, return to spiritual order

Why the ancient solfeggio scale isn't ancient, isn't solfeggio, and isn't a scale?

The first thing I didn’t like about the ancient solfeggio tones was part of the name. I remember that when I was at the music school, I had solfege, a book in which various (some even cool) melodies were written on a music staff. From this book, we learned to read what sounds are behind the notes, how they sound, and we also learned to sing by looking at them. Some of us were guessing, but the idea was that we looked at the note and imagined a specific sound in our head. It also happened that our task was to write down on the music staff what our teacher played for us. So I was a bit confused by the word used in the name „ancient solfeggio tones” which reminded me of the quoted above solfege. Solfeggio in music (also called solfège, sol-fa, solfedge, or solfa) is a pedagogical technique used to teach singing a vista, reading notes with the voice. A vista in musical terminology means the first performance of a given piece of music by a performer reading from the notes, without any preparation, that is, without being familiar with the music notation of this piece. [2] Nowadays, solfege has become a discipline serving to educate the musical ear. In addition to learning to read notes (proper solfege) and write music by ear (dictation), it also includes developing the abilities and skills of auditory analysis of music by developing a sense of pitch, timbre, and sound function, as well as a sense of rhythm and agogic-dynamic features, shaping intonation abilities, sensitivity to sound scales and musical styles, the ability to consciously improvise music with voice, etc. [3] Solfeggio is simply a form of solmization. Solmization in music means using the syllable names of sounds when singing. Guido d’Arezzo is considered to be the creator of the solmization, who from the hymn in honor of St. John the Baptist, Ut Queant Laxis, chose the initial syllables (Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La) of the individual verses, sung from the successive notes of the hexachord. Hexachord is such a nice word, meaning a series of 6 notes within a sixth (it’s a musical interval), with a semitone in the middle. The hexachord was built from the sounds of C, F, G, and thanks to this, there are three types of it: natural – C, D, E, F, G, A, soft – F, G, A, B, C, D and hard – G, A, H, C, D, E. Around 1600 a seventh note was added to the hexachord denoting it with the syllable Si, and around 1650 the voiceless Ut was replaced by the syllable Do. [4] There are actually two solfeggio systems: one with a fixed first syllable Do (fixed Do) and the other with a movable one movable Do). The difference is that in the fixed Do, the first note of solfeggio (the first syllable – Do) will be constant and will always be the note C, and in the movable Do, the syllables will correspond to the steps of the scale, however, the sound of the first syllable will be different depending on the scale used – for example, if the G major scale is used, the first syllable Do will be equal to the note G. Guido d’Arezzo is believed to have used a movable Do.

I think that anyone who has read this material up to this point has already understood that the ancient sounds of solfeggio are not absolutely ancient. Quoting from Wikipedia, antiquity is a period in history (…) covering the time (…) from the emergence of the first civilizations to around the 5th century AD [5] Guido d’Arezzo, the creator of solfeggio, lived in the times from around 991 to around 1050, meaning in the Middle Ages. We also recall that Ut Queant Laxis was written by Paulus Diaconus in the 8th century. This was my second serious objection to the theory of the ancient solfeggio tones. I couldn’t understand why they were called ancient by Dr. Horowitz and Dr. Puleo.

It should also be made clear that the Bible was divided into chapters in the 12th century, and the verses were not numbered until the 16th century. [6] Since the frequencies of the ancient sounds of solfeggio derive from the reduction of the numbers of verses 12 to 83 found in chapter 7th of the Book of Numbers, the founder of the solfeggio, Guido d’Arezzo, could not have known this and thus could not calculate it. I also want to emphasize that in d’Arezzo’s time there were no tools to measure the pitch (frequency) of a sound, so assigning a frequency of 396 Hz to the syllable UT, 417 Hz to RE, 528 Hz to MI, and so on does not make any sense because d’Arezzo had no idea of these frequencies.

I mentioned above that d’Arezzo, chose the initial syllables (Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La) of individual lines from the hymn in honor of St. John the Baptist, Ut Queant Laxis, sung from the next notes of the hexachord (a series of 6 notes within the sixth with a semitone in the middle). Just listen to Ut Queant Laxis on YouTube to understand that each line starts with a sound one step higher. [7] However, when we arrange the frequencies decoded by Dr. Puleo from the Book of Numbers in ascending order, the effect is completely different and is nothing like the sounds of Ut Queant Laxis. In fact, the ordering of these frequencies is absolutely unlike any known musical scale, due to the very strange distances between each note. These distances, however, make a numerical sense, which I will write about in a moment, while talking about my discovery. In addition, Guido d’Arezzo is believed to have used a solfeggio with a movable Do. This means that the solfeggio sounds did not have a constant pitch, i.e. they did not have a specific frequency, and thus defining 396 Hz for Do (UT) and subsequent frequencies for the scale makes no sense. The ancient tones of solfeggio are therefore not solfeggio and they create absolutely no scale.

In my further considerations, I will omit a few other facts that do not stick together in the story of the ancient solfeggio tones, such as the scale with A = 444 Hz, the paradox of simultaneous situating 528 Hz for A and C, the Pythagorean method of reducing numbers, which really is the method of numerology, and is also known as the method mod 9, or the alleged fact that the frequency of 528 Hz is well known in the world of biology.

I promise to translate the rest as soon as possible 😉

O czym mówi Marko Rodin w swoim modelu matematyki wirowej?

Marko Rodin

Dla samej siebie grupę trójek nazwałam pierwszym trójkątem z pionu, grupę szóstek drugim trójkątem z pionu i grupę dziewiątek trzecim trójkątem z pionu.

Kwadrat Lo-Shu

W symbolice chińskiej liczby 2, 5 i 8 odpowiadają elementowi ziemi, 7 i 6 elementowi metalu, 1 elementowi wody, 3 i 4 elementowi drzewa i 9 elementowi ognia.

Mamy więc 21 (021) i 102, dlaczego by więc nie stworzyć kolejnego trójkąta?

W taki właśnie sposób powstały zestawy kamertonów Solfeggio I i Solfeggio II.
